32. Gardner Minshew

As a fan of the mustachioed macho this doesn’t, please me to say but his time as the starting Quarter Back for the Jacksonville Jaguars is officially over with the arrival of Clemson stud, Trevor Lawrence. Minshew was never the worst QB in the league during his time under centre but now he has been usurped he can only be placed here.

31. Daniel Jones

A lot of eyebrows were raised when the Giants took Jones 6th overall in the 2019 draft when Kentucky outside linebacker Josh Allen was still on the board, a position New York needed to strengthen. Criticism would continue to grow as no one projected Jones to be top 10 and with 2 other picks in the first round the Giants could most likely have selected the Duke QB later in the first round and saved a considerable amount of cap space when negotiating his contract. Looking at Jones’ production in NFL he certainly hasn’t set the league alight, the Giants organisation certainly hasn’t helped with their revolving door of head coaches however, Jones wasn’t able to take the starting job from a rapidly declining Eli Manning and in the seasons since the veteran’s retirement it’s clear to see why. Jones is still living off the Manning family’s endorsement but is the upcoming 2021/22 season is no different then the Giants will be looking for a new QB in the 2022 draft.

30. Sam Darnold

There was a lot of hype around Sam Darnold when he was picked 3rd over all by the New York Jets in 2018 but joining one of the biggest tire fires in professional sport isn’t easy for any player. The Jets haven’t had a notable QB since Joe Namath and any other notable QB’s they have had have been notable for the wrong reasons. Mark (Sanchize) Sanchez is forever remembered for the butt fumble, Brett Farvre was already in a retirement home when he suited up for the Jets and ex-Ravens QB Joe Flacco was available, so the Jets pounced. Darnold’s time with the Jets will always be remembered with the quote “I’m seeing ghosts’ man” when playing against the New England Patriots formidable defence. Now and then, Sam Darnold has shown ability in the air and on the ground but never consistently, perhaps his move to Carolina will spark some consistency in the USC gunslinger but until we see that he’s ranked at 30.

29. Jameis Winston/Taysom Hill

The QB situation at New Orleans is mind boggling to say the least, with veteran QB Drew Brees retiring their 2 options under centre are swiss army knife Taysom Hill and ex Buccaneers, Heisman trophy winner and 1st overall pick Jameis Winston. If I had to put money on who would be starting it would have to be Winston since he is an out and out quarter back whereas Hill is a running back, receiver, and kick/punt returner as well as a quarter back and could prove to be an invaluable weapon to Winston especially since their star receiver Michael Thomas had a very average 2020/21 season by his standards. However, the reason for the low rating is that neither QB in my opinion is a reliable option as a franchise QB, Winston was a failure at Tampa Bay and even QB coach Bruce Arians couldn’t fix him so starting for a play off giant like the New Orleans Saints doesn’t bode well for the future. There is also the issue of cap space as the Saints have found themselves in the red and will need to look to free some space on their roster so we could be looking at a potential tank from the Saints in the upcoming season to put themselves in a good position for next year’s draft if they feel like it’s the right time to find their next franchise QB.

28. Drew Lock

Drew Lock is an interesting case, the boy has talent, but we are still yet to see his true potential and an injury crisis in the Broncos organisation led to the team having to field and undrafted rookie wide receiver at QB due to Lock and his back up both ruled out to injury. The QB situation under GM John Elway’s leadership is tough to read from thinking Brock Osweiler was going to be an ample replacement for Peyton Manning to then looking at the retirement bound Joe Flacco, freakishly tall QB’s seem to catch the eye of Elway with their ability not seen as such a priority. Nobody is expecting much from the 2021/22 Broncos so to fairly judge Lock will be tricky especially with veteran Teddy Bridgwater brought in to possibly be the starter so only time will tell on Drew Locks potential ceiling, personally, I believe that if the Broncos do start with Bridgewater next season they will eventually return to Lock.

27. Ryan Fitzpatrick

Fitzmagic, Fitzeption, Fitzpatrick which ever name you choose to call the veteran journeyman we can all agree that to many fans of the NFL he is somewhat of a cult hero. Despite this you must ask yourself why he is just about to start his 16th NFL season with his 9th different team. Fitzpatrick has just signed a 1 year $10million dollar deal with the Washington Football Team who, after sending rookie QB Dwayne Haskins to Pittsburgh, needed a quick fix before the 2022 draft in which we can assume they will try their luck again at finding a franchise QB. As a 7th round draft pick few would have expected Fitzpatrick to have lasted this long in the league and even less would have thought that he would hold some records of his own. The 38-year-old Harvard graduate is the only QB to throw for over 400 yards in 3 consecutive games, he has the most career passing yards and passing touchdowns for a QB to never reach the playoffs, he is the first Harvard graduate to start and NFL game and could potentially have the highest Wonderlic test score of any NFL QB. Fitzpatrick has always been brought in to paper over any cracks a franchise has until they find their long-term solution, Fitzpatrick’s time at the Jets and Buccaneers will probably be remembered as his most successful but both teams were happy to move on from the veteran.

26. Andy Dalton

Dalton has become somewhat of a journey man himself in recent years, after 8 years with the Bengals he moved to the Cowboys after Joe Burrows was drafted in to replace him. Dalton’s time in Dallas wasn’t anything to write home about, after starting QB Dak Prescott suffered a season ending ankle injury Dalton was called up however, there must be something in the water at Dallas as Dalton also suffered an injury riddled season and now plies his trade with the Chicago Bears. Although the veteran may begin the season as starter recent rookie acquisition Justin Fields will be the Bears’ long-term choice so I wouldn’t be surprised if Dalton had a few more teams left in him before retirement.

25. Carson Wentz

When Carson Wentz first joined the league, it looked like the Eagles had their franchise QB finally, in his rookie season he looked to be a very dangerous dual threat QB who could seem to escape any sort of pressure and throw most throws. However, several injury filled seasons later and watching Super Bowl 52 from the bench as backup Nick Foles lead the Eagles to their first ever title win. Now the eagles have their new future in Jalen Hurts and Wentz has been shipped off to the Indianapolis Colts. Wentz has the chance to salvage his career with a team slowly putting the pieces together he will have T.Y Hilton to throw to and Quenton Nelson to protect him the colts could very much have a 9-7 season on their hands and can build from there.

24. Cam Newton

As a Patriot fan I was very excited at the prospect of having Cam Newton as the new QB taking over from Tom Brady. Despite his recent injury history, the 2015 league MVP still has plenty in the tank and after sitting on the side lines for the Panthers recovering from his injuries and entering the Patriots organisation the healthiest, he’s been for some time everything was looking positive. The Patriots had more opt outs due to covid than any other team in the League and the offense was made up of young rookies and a battered and bruised Julian Edelman, so Cam had his work cut out for him. Not only did the veteran QB contract covid early in the season his shoulder injury really started to affect his ability to throw. With Cam under centre the patriots missed the play offs for the first time in over a decade, but Newton was never a long-term solution, and the drafting of Alabama alumni Mac Jones proves this. Whilst Jones learns from the side lines Cam will be returning as the starter with more weapons on the offense and a stronger knowledge of the play book things can only improve for the 6-time world champs.

23. Teddy Bridgewater

The newest QB acquisition by the Denver Broncos I personally can’t quite believe that Teddy Bridgewater is still playing in the NFL. After a potential career threatening injury at the Vikings, Bridgewater returned to playing but has never been able to die down a starting job at any team he’s landed in. when healthy Bridgewater is a very capable QB and could lead a team to the play offs given the right situation however, Bridgewater’s ceiling is the wildcard game, and he has probably been brought into Denver so Drew Lock can learn from a very capable QB.

22. Ben Roethlisburger

Now that Drew Brees and Philip Rivers have both retired Ben Roethlisburger will surely be the next naughties QB to hang up his boots. The 2-time Super Bowl champion will now be entering his 16th season as a Steeler and the clock has now surely struck time on Big Ben’s career. Despite an 11-0 start to the 2020/21 season no one was convinced that the Steelers would be the AFC’s representatives at the super bowl. The recent acquisition of ex-Washington Football Team QB Dwayne Haskins seems to suggest that the Steelers are looking for Ben’s replacement and Haskin’s should fit in well with the Steelers’ infamous discipline issues, especially on the offense.

21. Tua Tagovailoa

Give it a few seasons and Tua Tagovailoa could move up a considerable amount on this list but his injury issues and tentativeness of the Dolphins to activate him as their starter of Fitzpatrick means it’s hard to put him any higher. His equivalent in the league would have to be Cardinals QB Kyler Murray as a small versatile ground and air threat and now that Fitzpatrick has left for Washington, we can expect to see Tue in all 17 games this season providing he stay healthy of course. If Tua fills his potential, we could see a top 10 QB in the making and a long term QB option for the Dolphins but keeping QBs healthy is something that the Dolphins have never been great at.
